Sawn timber from Kathal
Johann Pabst Holzindustrie’s sawn timber is produced at the sawmill in Kathal near Obdach. This location is of particular historical significance: it was here that company founder Johann Pabst bought a disused plant in 1940, laying the foundations for today’s company. Kathal remains a central production site to this day. While around 5,000 solid cubic metres of wood were processed per year in 1940, this figure is around 80 times higher today.
The Kathal sawmill processes around 400,000 solid cubic metres of spruce logs into sawn timber every year. Most of the wood processed comes from Styria and neighbouring regions; part of it comes from altitudes between 700 and 1,200 metres. Product quality is determined by grading and technical specifications.
The sawn timber produced in Kathal forms the basis for many other solid wood products such as glued laminated timber or planed goods. Since 2024, the sawmill has been undergoing extensive modernisation as part of an investment of around 40 million euros. While Kathal specialises in sawn timber and planed timber, the focus in Zeltweg is on Glued laminated timber, pellets and AlpenSpan.
