PABST SUSTAINABILITY
Use of main products and by-products and energy generation at our sites
Strategy 2025+: Roots for the future

Complete value creation
100% utilisation – from the trunk to the chip.
From trunk to chip, we use main products and by-products for different applications: solid wood for construction, sawdust for pellets, wood shavings for AlpenSpan and bark to generate process heat.

3.5 megawatts of solar energy
Electricity from our roofs
Solar power systems with a total installed capacity of around 3.5 megawatts are in operation on our hall roofs. Generation and self-consumption are reported annually.

28 megawatts of thermal energy
Thermal energy from biomass
Our three combined heat and power plants are fired with bark and wood chips. We use the thermal energy generated efficiently to dry sawn timber and sawdust for pellet production. At the same time, we use it to supply our infrastructure with heat.

Reliability
Combined heat and power plant based on wood gas
Our combined heat and power plant uses wood gas from pellets to generate electricity and heat at the same time. With an electrical output of around 400 kW and a thermal output of 600 kW, we secure operational processes and the heat supply – especially during the winter overhaul.
Focus on the 2025+ strategy
We source our wood primarily from a catchment area of around 100 kilometres, in particular from the Mur and Mürz Valleys and the Lavant Valley. Part of the wood comes from altitudes above 700 metres. Slower growth there can favour fine annual rings; the product properties are determined by grading and technical specifications.
We utilise 100% of the raw material wood. The sawmill supplies sawn timber as the basis, while the by-products such as sawdust and wood shavings are refined into pellets and AlpenSpan. Bark and wood chips are used in our own heating plants to generate heat for drying and hall heating. Nothing is wasted.
Goals for the 2025+ strategy were developed in 15 workshops. These include the expansion of solar power on already sealed surfaces and the systematic recording of operational greenhouse gas emissions. Future environmental targets will be published with base year, target year, measures and progress indicators.
We use solar power systems on our roof areas as well as electricity from our CHP plant. Generation, consumption and the share of self-supply are reported annually. Biomass heating plants cover the thermal requirements of production; recovery systems support the use of heat.
